Ian and the Mystery of the Hidden Seeds
It was a sunny Tuesday morning in Safari Forest, and Ian had brought something very special to the Kingdom Kids gathering. A notebook. A pencil. A magnifying glass. And a ruler!
Sophie tilted her head. “Ian, are we going on an adventure or taking a test?”
Ian smiled proudly. “Neither! Today, I’m conducting a very important scientific investigation!”
Timmy leaned closer. “Does your investigation involve snacks?”
“No, Timmy,” Ian replied.
Timmy sighed. “Then I’m not sure I understand the purpose.” Everyone laughed.
Ms. Rose approached carrying a basket filled with little clay pots, soil, and seeds. “Good morning, Kingdom Kids! Today we’re going to plant something wonderful!”
“Flowers?” Bleu fluttered excitedly.
“Some beautiful sunflowers,” Ms. Rose answered.
Sophie bounced on her paws. “I LOVE sunflowers! They’re so tall and bright!”
Ian stretched his long neck. “Excellent! I shall carefully document their development!”
Each Kingdom Kid received a pot, some soil, and a sunflower seed. Ms. Rose showed them how to plant the seeds at the proper depth and gently water the soil.
Timmy patted his pot. “Grow big, little seed!”
Bleu giggled. “I think it heard you!”
Ian carefully measured the soil, planted his seed, and wrote in his notebook. DAY ONE: SEED PLANTED.
Then he stared at the pot. Nothing happened. He leaned closer. Still nothing. He picked up his magnifying glass. “Interesting.”
Sophie peered over his shoulder. “What is it?”
“I cannot see any signs of growth!”
Ms. Rose smiled. “Ian, you just planted it.”
“I know,” Ian replied. “But how can I be sure anything is happening if I can’t see it?”
Ms. Rose sat beside him. “That’s a wonderful question. Tell me, Ian, what do you know about sunflower seeds?”
Ian straightened proudly. “Well, they need the right soil, water, sunlight, and time. Under suitable conditions, the seed begins to germinate, roots grow, and eventually a little shoot comes up through the soil.”
“Very good!” Ms. Rose replied. “And can you see all of that happening right now?”
Ian shook his head. “No. Most of it happens underneath the soil.”
“Does not seeing it mean nothing is happening?”
Ian thought carefully. “No. It means I can’t see it yet.”
Ms. Rose opened her Bible. “That reminds me of something God’s Word teaches us in 2 Corinthians 5:7.” She read: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
Ian looked at his little pot. “So walking by faith means trusting something even when I can’t see it?”
“Walking by faith means trusting God and what He has said,” Ms. Rose explained. “We don’t have to see or understand everything before we can believe His Word and obey Him.”
Ian considered that. “But Ms. Rose, I still like having answers.”
“And that’s wonderful!” she said. “God has given you a mind to think, learn, and ask questions. Faith doesn’t mean you stop using it.”
Ian smiled. “Good! Because I have approximately forty-seven questions about sunflower germination.”
Sophie groaned playfully. “FORTY-SEVEN?”
“Possibly forty-eight,” Ian replied. Everyone giggled.
Ms. Rose continued. “Think about this, Ian. You know how to care for your seed because you’ve learned what it needs. So what should you do while you’re waiting for it to grow?”
Ian looked at his notebook. “Water it when needed, give it sunlight, and be patient.”
“Exactly! And when we walk by faith, we keep learning God’s Word, obeying what He teaches us, and trusting Him with what we don’t yet understand.”
Bleu fluttered toward the pots. “So we don’t have to dig up the seeds every day to see if they’re growing?”
“That’s right,” Ms. Rose said. “In fact, digging them up could damage them!”
Timmy quickly moved his trunk away from his pot. “I wasn’t going to do that!”
Sophie laughed. “Timmy, you were already reaching for the shovel!”
A few days later, the Kingdom Kids returned to check their plants. Ian hurried to his pot with his notebook. DAY FIVE: OBSERVATION.
He leaned forward. And there it was! A tiny green sprout pushing through the soil!
“IT GREW!” Ian shouted.
Timmy raised his trunk. “Your scientific investigation was a success!”
Ian grinned. “According to my observations, the seed was developing even when I couldn’t see it!”
Ms. Rose smiled. “And what did you learn about walking by faith?”
Ian looked at his little sunflower sprout. “I learned that I can keep doing what I know is right while I wait. And when I don’t understand everything, I can still trust God and His Word!”
“Beautifully said,” Ms. Rose replied.
Ian carefully wrote one final sentence in his notebook: FAITH MEANS I CAN TRUST GOD, EVEN WHEN I DON’T HAVE EVERY ANSWER.
Then he looked at his friends. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a sunflower to measure!”
And from that day forward, Ian remembered something wonderful: He could ask questions, keep learning, and use the sound mind God had given him—all while walking by faith and trusting God’s Word!
