Sophie and the Courage to Stand

It was a beautiful Wednesday morning in Safari Forest, and Sophie was feeling especially fabulous! She bounced down the trail with her tail swishing and her head held high.

“Good morning, Safari Forest!” she announced. “Your favorite tiger has arrived!”

Timmy looked up from his breakfast. “Favorite tiger? Sophie, you’re the only tiger here!”

Sophie winked. “Exactly! And I’m doing an AMAZING job!” Everyone burst into laughter.

Today, Ms. Rose had planned a special outdoor game for the Kingdom Kids and some visiting friends from the neighboring meadow. The game was called THE GREAT SAFARI TREASURE DASH!

Colorful ribbons were hidden around a grassy clearing. Each team had to find five ribbons and bring them back to the starting line. But there was one important rule: Every ribbon had to be found inside the marked playing area.

Ms. Rose pointed to the bright orange flags around the clearing. “Remember, Kingdom Kids, the flags show where it’s safe to play. Stay inside the boundaries, work together, and have fun!”

Sophie stretched her paws. “Five ribbons? Easy! Team Sophie is about to make HISTORY!”

Ian tilted his head. “I believe our team is still called the Kingdom Kids.”

Sophie grinned. “Details, Ian. Details!”

Ms. Rose blew her whistle. “READY, SET, GO!”

Sophie raced across the grass. She spotted a red ribbon beside a tree. “ONE!” A blue ribbon near a flower patch. “TWO!” A yellow ribbon tucked behind a rock. “THREE!” Sophie was moving fast!

But when she reached the edge of the clearing, she noticed something interesting. A bright purple ribbon was lying just beyond the orange flags. Two visiting meadow friends were standing nearby.

“Hey, Sophie!” one called. “There’s a ribbon right there! Just grab it!”

Sophie looked at the ribbon. Then she looked at the flags. “That’s outside the playing area,” she said.

The other friend shrugged. “It’s only a little bit outside. Nobody will notice!”

Sophie raised one eyebrow. “Oh, somebody will notice.”

“Who?” the first friend asked.

Sophie placed a paw on her hip. “ME!”

The friends laughed. “Come on, Sophie! Don’t you want to win?”

Sophie looked back toward the starting line. She really did want to win. She loved winning! She loved cheering! She especially loved announcing that she had won! But she remembered what Ms. Rose had said. Stay inside the boundaries.

Sophie took a breath. “I do want to win,” she answered. “But I’m not breaking the rules to do it.”

One of the visiting friends frowned. “It’s just a game.”

Sophie smiled. “Exactly! So let’s play it the right way!”

Just then, Ms. Rose walked toward the group. “Everything all right over here?”

Sophie nodded. “We found a ribbon outside the flags, but I told them we should stay inside the playing area.”

Ms. Rose smiled. “That was a wise decision, Sophie.”

Sophie shrugged playfully. “Well, I do have my brilliant moments.”

Ms. Rose chuckled. “Sophie, do you remember our Scripture for this week?”

Sophie stood tall. “Of course! We walk by faith, not by sight!”

“That’s right,” Ms. Rose said. “And how does that help us when we’re deciding what to do?”

Sophie thought for a moment. “Well, I could see that ribbon. And I really wanted to grab it.”

“But?” Ms. Rose encouraged.

“But I knew what was right. And I didn’t have to let wanting to win make my decision.”

Ms. Rose nodded. “Exactly. Walking by faith means trusting God and living according to His truth. We don’t allow what looks exciting, easy, or popular to lead us away from doing what is right.”

Sophie smiled. “So faith isn’t just something I talk about on Sundays?”

“No,” Ms. Rose replied. “It’s something we live every day, including when we play games, treat our friends, and make choices.”

Sophie looked at the visiting friends. “Come on! Let’s find the rest of the ribbons!” They hurried back into the clearing.

Before long, Timmy spotted a green ribbon hanging from a low branch. “I FOUND ONE!” Ian discovered another tucked behind a large leaf. “According to my calculations, that makes five!”

Bleu fluttered above them. “WE DID IT!”

The Kingdom Kids raced toward the starting line. They didn’t finish first. In fact, another team had already collected all five ribbons.

Sophie stopped and looked at the winning team. Then she smiled. “HEY! GREAT JOB, EVERYBODY!” The other team cheered.

Timmy looked at Sophie. “Are you okay that we didn’t win?”

Sophie tossed her head. “Timmy, please. I am still fabulous!” Everyone laughed. Then she added with a grin: “And I didn’t need a trophy to prove it!”

Ms. Rose gathered the children together. “Today, I saw something even more important than winning a game.” She smiled at Sophie. “I saw someone choose to do what was right, even when others encouraged her to do something different.”

Sophie looked at her friends. “I learned something today. I can be bold without always getting my way. And I can stand for what’s right without being unkind to anybody!”

Ms. Rose nodded. “That’s what it looks like when our faith influences our choices.”

Sophie lifted her paw high. “Then I have a new announcement!”

Timmy grinned. “Oh boy. Here we go!”

Sophie declared: “I DON’T FOLLOW THE CROWD. I FOLLOW GOD’S WORD!”

Bleu twirled happily. “I LOVE that!”

Ian nodded. “A strong statement. Clear, accurate, and very Sophie.”

Sophie winked. “Thank you. I worked hard on it!”

And that Wednesday, Sophie learned something wonderful. She didn’t need everyone to agree with her to make the right choice. Her confidence was found in Christ Jesus, and she could walk by faith wherever she went!

Let's Grow

God’s Word tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Walking by faith means trusting God and allowing His Word to guide how we live.

Sometimes doing the right thing isn’t the easiest or most popular choice. Children may face moments when friends encourage them to break a rule, leave someone out, say something unkind, or do something they know isn’t right. But our confidence doesn’t have to depend on whether everyone agrees with us.

We can choose what honors God because our identity is found in Christ Jesus.

Sophie loved winning, and there was nothing wrong with enjoying a competition. But when she had an opportunity to break the rules, she chose to do what was right. And notice something important: Sophie didn’t insult the other children or try to make them feel bad. She simply stood by her decision and continued treating them with kindness.

Standing boldly for what is right doesn’t require us to be rude, argumentative, or unloving.

As parents, we can help children practice making godly choices with confidence and kindness. We can remind them that following Jesus is not about impressing others or winning everyone’s approval. It’s about trusting His Word and allowing that truth to shape our decisions. Faith is something we live, not just something we say!

Think About It

Why did Sophie want to grab the purple ribbon?

What did Sophie remember before making her decision?

Did Sophie have to be mean to the other children to stand for what was right?

What can you do when someone encourages you to make a choice you know isn’t right?

Family Faith Moment

Practice these three responses together. Have a parent describe a situation, then let your child practice answering confidently and kindly:

“No, thank you. I want to do what’s right.”

“Let’s choose something we can both feel good about.”

“I can be your friend without making that choice.”

Remind your child that if someone pressures them to do something unsafe or harmful, they can leave the situation and tell a trusted adult.

Say It Together

I walk by faith, not by sight! I can stand for what is right, speak with kindness, and follow God’s Word!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word and for teaching me to walk by faith. Thank You that my identity is found in Christ Jesus and not in what others think of me. Holy Spirit, help me recognize what is right and give me wisdom and courage to choose it. Teach me to stand on Your truth, even when others make different choices. Help me speak with kindness, treat others with love, and live in a way that honors You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Kingdom Kids Declaration

I receive knowledge. I do not reject it or turn away from it. My heart is open to receive. My mind is ready to be renewed. Holy Spirit, I ask You to help me apply it to my life. Amen.
