Week 2: I Don't Have to Be Afraid

Day 10 · Wednesday with Sophie

Fear can talk, but it doesn’t get to make my decisions.

Book connection: Fear Not

Scripture

“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.”
Psalm 56:3

Sophie and the Wobbly Bridge

Sophie stopped in front of a small wooden bridge in Safari Forest. She had crossed it before, but today the wind was blowing and the bridge moved a little. Creak... wobble... creak.

Usually Sophie was the one saying, “Come on! Let's go!” But today she didn't move.

Thoughts came: Don't cross it. What if you fall? Just turn around.

Timmy asked, “Is the bridge unsafe?” Sophie looked carefully. It was still strong, nothing was broken, and the path was open.

“No,” she admitted. “It just feels scary today.”

Sophie remembered: not every thought had to be believed, and she could feel afraid and still trust Jesus.

“Fear is telling me to turn around,” she said.

Timmy asked, “But what do you know?”

“I know the bridge is safe. And I know Jesus is with me.”

Sophie crossed one step at a time. Her stomach still felt fluttery, but she kept moving.

On the other side she smiled. “I thought being courageous meant I wasn't supposed to feel afraid. Now I know: I can feel fear without letting fear choose for me.”

Let's Grow

Courage does not mean never feeling afraid. Psalm 56:3 says, “When I am afraid...” Fear may tell you to run away, give up, hide, or avoid something right. But fear doesn't have to be your leader. Jesus is. Before moving forward, make sure what you're doing is safe, wise, and right. Courage does not mean doing dangerous things to prove you aren't afraid.

Think About It

Is there something good, safe, or right that fear has been keeping you from doing? What is fear telling you to do? What would trusting Jesus help you do?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You that I don't have to pretend I'm never afraid. When fear talks loudly, help me remember that fear is not my leader. You are. Give me wisdom to know what is safe and right, and courage to obey You even when I feel nervous. Holy Spirit, help me recognize fearful thoughts, remember God's truth, and choose my actions based on what is true. In Jesus' name, amen.

Kingdom Kids Declaration

I receive knowledge. I do not reject it or turn away from it. My heart is open to receive. My mind is ready to be renewed. Holy Spirit, I ask You to help me apply it to my life. Amen.

Now Let's Apply It!

Same story, same truth. Find your level.

  • Little Explorers

    Preschool–Kindergarten

Think of something safe that makes you a little nervous. Take three pretend brave steps: “Jesus is with me!” / “I can trust Jesus!” / “Fear is not my leader—Jesus is!”

  • Trail Adventurers

    Grades 1–2

Fold paper in half: FEAR SAYS / TRUTH SAYS. Write what fear has been telling you. On the truth side, write the truth from God's Word that actually addresses what fear is saying, then choose one safe and right next step.

  • Expedition Adventurers

    Grades 3–5

Work through: FEAR — What is fear telling me? FACT — What do I actually know? WORD — What does God's Word say that specifically addresses what fear is telling me? WISDOM — Is the action safe, wise, and right? CHOICE — What will I choose if Jesus, not fear, gets the final say?
